Team Goals
Team's FIRST Impact
Community Service
Our goal has been to create a student centered team, which provides the most compelling engineering and technology experiences possible for high school students. The majority of graduating students who have participated in the Punahou FIRST team pursue college degrees in engineering, science and technology fields.
Team 2090 is proud to have supported the growth and success of FIRST in the State of Hawaii. Team leader Aaron Dengler was one of the founders of the Hawaii FIRST LEGO League Championship. The team has sponsored numerous workshops in the 2009 season: a series of three LabView workshops for FRC mentors, workshops for FLL New Coaches, Referees, and Judges training.
Team 2090 makes its workshop facilities available to and local team in need of assistance. This year we are mentors to Mid-Pacific Institute and Waipahu High School. The team puts on FRC Robotics demonstrations and information sessions at community events including the Hawaii FLL Championship, The Hawaii Children's Museum, and the Sacred Hearts Academy Science Symposium.
Helping Mrs. Green Move (Jan. 2009)
The Punahou Robotics Team is always ready to lend a hand. When long-time Punahou faculty member Mrs. Green needed help moving, we were all too happy to lend our aid by providing a three vehicles and a bunch of willing workers to lift and carry boxes.
Christmas Caroling (Dec. 2008)
This year our team began an annual tradition of Christmas caroling a retirement home. We found that the event provided a meaningful experience that recharged and reunited us for the 2009 season while bringing joy to others.
Mentoring FIRST Lego League Teams (Fall 2008)
As many of our members are FLL veterans, it is only natural that we lend our aid to current FLL teams. By teaching the younger generation, we have a chance to increase future interest in FIRST Robotics, and the cycle continues. By setting a good example of gracious professionalism, we hope to create a positive environment for them to work in.
Hawaii Public Radio Pledge Drive (Fall 2008)
The Punahou Robotics team is always ready to help the community, whether it be the school community or that of the entire state. When HPR ran their yearly pledge drive, we lent our communication skills and manpower to a longstanding public service. All in all, we kicked ass and took names (literally, in the case of the latter).
Wall-E Discovery Day, June 14th, Children's Discovery Center (June 2008)
In June, we attended Wall-E Discovery Day. Using popular interest in Wall-E as a springboard, we demonstrated VEX robots and microbots to pique the interest of the next generation of roboticists. Seeing the shining faces of children intrigued and interested by robotics warmed our hearts.
Lacy Veach Day (October 2008)
Lacy Veach Day is a yearly celebration of astronaut and favorite son Charles Lacy Veach and his vision of science. Each year, the Punahou Robotics team provides food and runs a hands-on robotics demonstration with the previous year's robot. Exemplifying gracious professionalism, we invite other teams to provide similar demonstrations.
Mentoring Rookie FRC Teams: FIRST 2008 Season
Before the 2008 FIRST Robotics Season, several new teams entered the arena of competitive robotics. While still a relatively new team ourselves, we were happy to lend what aid we could to the teams that were just starting out. The process was a learning experience for all involved; not only did we give several new teams a jump-start into the FIRST experience, but we had the opportunity to test our own knowledge of robotics.
Solar Car Workshops (June 2007)
In 2007, we had the opportunity to teach middle school students about solar energy and our responsibility to the planet. By building solar cars out of recyclable material, we showed students that it was possible to build cost and energy efficient devices that could help humanity in our current energy crisis.
Repairing Electric Wheelchairs (2006)
In 2006, team members traveled to homes of the elderly to repair electric wheel chairs that had fallen prey to elements or had simply been neglected. In total, we repaired half a dozen wheelchairs and brightened half a dozen lives.
